PROGRAM LEADER
SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY AND 
AFRICAN AMERICAN LAND RETENTION (SFLR)
AMERICAN FOREST FOUNDATION
 
Job Overview
At the end of your first year, you would know that you had been successful if you could look back and see that you had accomplished the following:
  • Lead the on-going transition of the SFLR program administration from the U.S. Endowment to the American Forest Foundation (AFF). 
  • More landowners are participating in the program and more are managing sustainably – goals to be set with our partners after hire.
  • Increased the tools available for our partners to use in growing the number of participating landowners more efficiently.
  • Planned, lead and executed an annual retreat for the SFLR program leaders, building trust and vision with the local partners. 
  • Garnered more visibility with key audiences in the forest community, news media, present and prospective funders and the ATFS network – with an eye to accelerated growth and financial support.
  • Immersed yourself in the culture of the organization, developed a broad understanding of how we work, and have a firm understanding of AFF’s long-term goals and how the SFLR program contributes to those goals.
 
The position requires the following
  • An entrepreneurial mindset
  • Preferred -- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, and at least five years of experience in one or more of the following: natural resource management, social justice, community development, and/or major program management
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and grow a major program
  • Proven ability to think strategically, analyze critically, and translate ideas into actions
  • Experience working effectively with and through partnerships
  • Experience working with African American communities
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously and clearly bring projects to timely completion
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage program budgets and help raise support funds
  • Proven ability and reputation of working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and bringing people together toward a common goal, including volunteers, donors, partners, and staff
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart information to a range of constituencies
  • Ability to communicate effectively--to listen, influence, motivate, and lead

  • Results-oriented with a keen understanding of the steps necessary to achieve goals on deadline and within budget
  • Time management skills, with the ability to prioritize, coordinate and manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and display discretion, integrity, and tact when dealing with sensitive issues
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed, up to 40% of the time
  • Ability to effectively plan, problem solve, and implement positive change
  • Flexible, with the ability to work in unproven areas and adapt based on what is learned from each successive project
  • Strong initiative, a self-starter with tenacity, resilience and high energy
  • Ability to prioritize, coordinate and manage multiple priorities within established deadlines
  • Ability and willingness to accommodate some evening and weekend work
